Art Bank

August 2009

Client Profile: Thomson Playford Cutlers

Thomson Playford Cutlers has just completed a dynamic changeover of art works for their premises in Sydney’s Australia Square building. Operations Manager, Gaye Templar worked with Artbank consultants to ensure that an effective mix of images and objects were selected to best complement their client floor and showcase the space.

The lift opens to the entry level’s striking corporate interior, with curved shelving holding a quirky collection of ceramics from artists Anne Mercer, Greg Daly, Shaelene Murray and Theo Koning. Further into reception, knock out views of the harbour are offset by a suite of lithographs from Tim Maguire’s Horizon series. “It’s a terrific way to welcome people,” says Templar, “the art works tie in with our firm’s focus of fresh ideas and fresh approach for our clients.”

In the main meeting room Templar has selected a large ceramic vessel from Victorian artist Fiona Murphy. It’s one of the artist’s “biomorphic” vessels dramatically inspired by nature. It steers the eye to a magnificent corridor view of Sydney Harbour Bridge. In keeping with the law firm’s national focus and with Artbank’s ambit to purchase art works from all states of Australia (just this month accessioning its 10,000th art work!) Thomson Playford Cutlers has skilfully selected a winning combination.

Vogue Living Function - Melbourne

Artbank’s Melbourne showroom hosted a Vogue Living Artbank Tour in July. Vogue Living readers were invited to a behind-the-scenes look at our recent acquisitions, including a sneak peek of the hundreds of works in the store room, and informative floor talks.

Artbank Director, Geoffrey Cassidy, guided the crowd around the showroom discussing new acquisitions from the perspective of the purchasing curator and the role of Artbank as both arts support and a rental service. The newest acquisition on display was the time based work, The Wall, a video work by Jess MacNeil, illustrative of Artbank’s commitment to cutting edge work and new media. The showroom also included recent acquisitions of paintings, watercolours, photography and sculpture from artists Shorty Jangala Robertson, Patrick Doherty, Nadine Christensen, Pollyxenia Joannou, Charlie Sofo, Fiona McMonagle, Anne-Marie May, Renee So, John Nicholson and more.

On the night, Melbourne-based artist Helen Johnson gave an insightful floor talk about her painting Imagining Alex and Jack thinking about Australia from overseas, combining political satire, social and cultural commentary, philosophy and humour. She also shared the development of her recent wall paintings and installation art in her solo exhibition recently held at Sutton Gallery, Fitzroy Melbourne and also included in a current group show at the same venue.

For more information on all the recent acquisitions and to host your next corporate function at Artbank Melbourne please contact Marielle Soni on 03 9500 2119.
